This full-day online class is designed to be both an introduction and refresher course dealing with popular topics involving tree care. Licensed Tree Expert Ted Szczawinski will discuss tree identification, tree selection, tree planting, tree pruning, and hazardous tree identification. He will teach you how these topics relate to one another and aid in your ability to perform all of them. You'll gain an overview of many skills useful in the fields of arboriculture and horticulture.

Meet Your Instructor
Instructor Ted Szczawinski

Ted Szczawinski is a Licensed Tree Expert and professor of plant science and biology. He will share his knowledge on the topic of tree care best pracices in a manner that's fun, interactive, and easy-to-understand! 


The January 21, 2021 offering of this course was approved for the following credits. We will reapply for similar credits the next time the course runs, but we cannot guarantee credit approval for future offerings.

This course is offered online within the Canvas learning management system.

Equipment you will need to access this training:

  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone
  • Microphone is necessary if you'd like to ask questions.
  • Webcam is optional but not necessary
  • Speaker is optional but not necessary (you will be able to listen to the presentation by dialing in on your phone if your computer does not have a speaker)

Photo ID Requirement: Please note that you will be prompted to upload a picture of yourself holding your government-issued photo ID before you begin the course. The photo must be clear enough that we can read the name and verify that the person pictured on the ID is in fact the person holding it. You will receive a reminder email prior to the start of the class with further instructions.
