Valley National Bank Partners with Rutgers to Offer Training Program for Emerging Leaders

The intensive and highly-focused leadership training programs were specifically designed to help Valley National Bank team members reach their full potential.

Valley National Bank enjoys a well-earned reputation as one of the most trusted and respected financial institutions in the region. For over 85 years, Valley has been listening to the needs of its customers and providing innovative and competitive personalized financial services.

Valley's strength has always been its people. The Bank is dedicated to training and developing its management team through intensive and highly-focused employee training programs. As part of its leadership curriculum, Valley previewed instructors and course topics at the Rutgers Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) Annual Training Showcase. After identifying its training needs, the Bank partnered with OCPE in 2010 to pilot on-site courses on leadership development and core competencies.

Under the direction of professional management training consultant, George Wright, the program offers a curriculum that challenges emerging leaders at the Bank by focusing on topics such as Emotional Intelligence, Critical Thinking Skills, Leading, and Adapting to Change.

In addition, Valley collaborated with Rutgers OCPE to develop a second management training program geared toward mid-level management leadership. This customized "Transfer of Knowledge" training program is designed to build strong teams by providing a forum for executive leadership teams to analyze a business case and develop an action plan to resolve the business challenge. Ideas are tested within team settings and solutions are presented to management based on a group consensus.

Feedback from employees has been extremely positive and the training has been well-received by executive management, who have contracted with Rutgers OCPE to continue the customized "Transfer of Knowledge" program for new cohorts. The current group's training is expected to conclude in the summer and a third group is planned for fall 2017.
