Re: Recertification Process and Sources of Recertification Credits

As a Certified Recycling Professional (CRP) you are required to document attendance in a minimum of twelve (12) hours of continuing education each year to maintain your status. The purpose of the recertification requirements is to ensure CRP's continually update their skills and knowledge in technical, regulatory and managerial areas of recycling to supplement and expand upon material presendted in the core Recycling Certification Series courses.

It is your responsiblity to maintain a record of the courses you attend and forward that informaiton to the NJ Agricultural Experiment Station (formerly Cook College) Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) when you have fulfilled the requirements for recertification. A Recertification Tracking Form must be returned to OCPE by January 31 to document recertification efforts during the prior year. No reminder notices will be sent. Copies of the Recertification Tracking Form are available directly from OCPE.

Sources of Recertification Credits

Recertification credits can be obtained through a number of different forums, providing the requirements for obtaining approval of these programs for use as recertification credits have been met. Potential sources of credits include:

  • Recycling Certification Series courses offered by OCPE and/or ANJR
  • ANJR quaterly meetings or other programs
  • County Coordinator meetings (formal, scheduled meetings with agendas and speakers which have received prior approval for use as recertification credits)
  • Programs related to recycling sponsored by the Solid Wasted Management Association of North America (SWANA), the US EPA or the NJDEP or
  • Programs given by the other agencies or organizations that have been given approval for use as recertification hours by the Recycling Advisory Committee

Other programs or training sessions are welcome to be submitted for approval for CRP recertification. Programs submitted must meet the following criteria.

  • The sponsoring agency must submit a request for approval of the program for review to OCPE at least ten (10) working days before the first day of the event. The request must include an hour-by-hour agenda listing topics, speakers, and program objectives.
  • The sponsoring agency must agree to provide a roster of attendees and a copy of a sign-in sheet to confirm participation. This information must be submitted to OCPE within ten (10) working days of the completion of the program.
  • The sponsoring agency must agree to provide confirmation of attendance for at least three (3) years after the conclusion of the program.
  • If a program is reviewed but not approved by OCPE prior to the event, the sponsoring agency may appeal the decision to the Recycling Certification Series Advisory Board. The decision of a majority of the Board will be final and binding.
  • Recertification credits will not be granted for courses on regulatory compliance topics, such as health and safety training or defensive driving. Credits also will not be awarded for any program that fails to secure approval prior to the start of the program.

Working within these guidelines we will ensure that the New Jersey Recycling Certificaiton Series maintains its status as one of the most comprehensive and respected recycling/solid waste training programs in the country. For more information, contact Carol Broccoli of OCPE at (7320 932-9271 x618 or via email at broccoli@njaes.rutgers.edu. The determination of which training course is applicable to a given individual will be made through review of the “Application for Certification/Recertification” (see link below or call 732-932-9271) for members of the Recycling Advisory Committee, a group of professionals from the fields of recycling, solid waste and government, charged with constantly reviewing and updating the series training. A copy of this form must accompany all registration forms or be sent separately for review prior to program registration.  NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE!
