How to Communicate with Patients Effectively to Improve Health Outcomes

Anyone – regardless of literacy level, education level obtained, socio-economic status, language spoken, age, race, gender – can be at risk for low health literacy. Low health literacy reduces a patient's ability to obtain, process, and understand health information, which can result in mistakes, illnesses recurring, and re-hospitalizations.

In this 2-minute preview of our two-hour course, you'll hear trainer and communications expert, Bill Jamison, talk about a "universal approach" to patient education, in which healthcare providers should treat all patients as potentially having low health literacy. He shares some simple strategies from the full course that help improve healthcare providers' communication with patients.

In the full two-hour training program, Mr. Jamison explores in-depth topics like: what is healthy literacy, who is at risk for health miscommunication, red flags for low health literacy and more. Healthcare professionals participate in interactive exercises and leave the program with specific strategies and tools to improve their communications with all patients -- whether they have low health literacy or not -- for better health and patient outcomes.

About Bill Jamison, Patient Education Course Instructor

Bill Jamison is a communications consultant and an accomplished public speaker who has been teaching courses through OCPE since 2002. Customized employee training program participants have enjoyed his engaging presentation style while participating in workplace training on topics including team building, emergency and crisis communications, effective speaking and presentations, improving interpersonal communication skills, message management, marketing for non-profit organizations, and more.

Bill has been certified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a Crisis Emergency Risk Communications trainer. Bill has prior experience as a communications specialist with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), where he managed the content, design and flow of information for the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services web site. His responsibilities at NJDOH also included coordinating distance education activities, conducting workshops for professional staff, representing the Department at conferences, overseeing public relations and media projects, organizing public information campaigns, and designing publications for the general public and professional health community. His educational background includes an Associate of Arts degree from Union College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Montclair State College.
