The Rutgers/NJAES Office of Continuing Education (OCPE) and the NJ Clean Communities Council will offer a two-day Clean Communities safety training course in the fall of 2016. The purpose of the course is to provide coordinators with the information they need to organize cleanups that adhere to safety guidelines and to learn how to effectively involve volunteers that may be unfamiliar with applicable safety procedures and regulations. Information on liability and insurance policies will be covered.

All attendees must attend the classroom session of the program on September 21 and then select one of two scheduled "hands-on" field training sessions which are scheduled for October 13 OR October 21.The training course is open to coordinators who are Certified Clean Communities coordinators.The course can be used for recertification credits.


Day One: The September 21 classroom session will be held at the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT), located on Rutgers University's Busch campus in Piscataway.

Day Two: Attendees must select one of two scheduled "hands-on" field cleanup sessions listed below.

  • The October 13 hands-on session will be held at the Englewood Boat Basin, located at the Palisades Interstate Park (Bergen County).
  • The October 21 session will be held at the Raritan Yacht Club in Perth Amboy (Middlesex County).

Case Studies Panel: Safety on Streets & Beaches
Clean Communities Coordinators discuss how they implement safety measures during cleanups.

Panel of Experts
Panel of experts will discuss hot topics such as cleaning dump sites and disposal of hazardous waste; tire dumps and mosquito viruses; and water pollution. Speakers to be announced.

Roundtable Discussions: Discuss one safety concern and how you handle or would handle the problem during a cleanup.


In addition to 1.0 Rutgers CEUS, this Clean Communities course is approved for the following credits:

NJ Certified Recycling Professionals (CRPs): 6 Classroom credits for Day 1 only (no credits for clean-up days)

NJ Certified Public Works Managers (CPWM): 3 Management, 3 Government for Day 1 only (no credits for clean-up days)

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for attendees on both field days, as well as for the classroom session.
