This class will be mostly self-paced. Participants can complete the self-paced course content (which will take approximately 5 hours) between May 17-23, 2021. There will be one LIVE, interactive webinar for which you MUST be present on May 20 from 10am-1pm EDT.


Federal regulations require all employees who work on sites that may expose them to hazardous substances or health hazards receive training allowing them to work safely, knowledgeably, and effectively.  This practical online course is designed to meet the 8-hour annual refresher training requirements under OSHA's Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response regulation [29 CFR 1910.120(e)].

Topics to be Covered Include:

  • Site investigation and characterization
  • New spill containment technologies
  • Hazard recognition
  • Decontamination procedures
  • Safety, health, and other site hazards
  • Understanding of MSDS, Emergency Response Guidebook
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) - **Note: Students and employers are still responsible for training on the company specific PPE used.
  • Work practices that minimize risk
  • Safe use of controls and equipment
  • Air monitoring and instrumentation
  • Recognition of signs and symptoms of exposure
  • Medical surveillance

This online course will also address emergency response plans, spill containment, and other applicable and current safety and health procedures.

Limas Forte has acquired exceptional communication skills as an Adjunct Professor at Long Island University and OSHA Outreach Trainer. He earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Morehouse College, and his Master's degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University. He has also attained several professional certifications from HUD, EPA, U.S. Department of Labor/OSHA, and NYCHPD; currently a Lead-Based Paint Inspector, Risk Assessor, Lead Sampling Technician, Certified Renovator, and Training Consultant.


In addition to 0.8 Rutgers CEUs, this OSHA HAZWOPER refresher course is approved for the following credits:

NJ Health Officers & Registered Environmental Health Specialists: Rutgers University, NJAES, Office of Continuing Professional Education has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Health as a provider of NJ Public Health Continuing Education Contact Hours (CEs). Participants who complete this education program will be awarded 3.0 NJ Public Health Continuing Education Contact Hours (CEs).

NJ Licensed Water & Wastewater Operators: 8 TCHs SAFETY (Approval # 01-030201-31)
Please note: Under NJDEP regulations, only one-third (1/3) of the total number of TCHs needed to maintain your license can be associated with courses or events which have been approved by NJDEP as safety programs (i.e., those with course approval numbers ending in "1").

NJ Professional Engineers: 8 Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Credits

NJ Certified Public Works Managers: 3 Technical and 2 Government

NJ Well Drillers and Pump Installers: 8 Safety CEPs

NY Professional Engineers: 7.5 PDHs (NOTE: This class may not be used to fulfill the land surveyors continuing education requirement in NYS.)

American Board of Industrial Hygiene: This event can be claimed for CM credit by ABIH Diplomates. This class can only be used ONCE per cycle (every 5 years).

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no continuing education credits for PA Water/Wastewater Operators offered for the online version of this class.

Accessing this Online Course

This course is offered online within the Canvas learning management system. The self-paced course content will take approximately 5 hours to complete, and participants will have 5 days to complete it on their own. There will be one LIVE, interactive webinar for which you MUST be present on May 20 from 10am-1pm EDT.

  • Computer or tablet (phones are not recommended for optimal viewing and interaction)

Photo ID Requirement:

Each registrant will be asked provide a photo of him/herself holding their government-issued photo ID. This is required by credit boards so that you may receive credits for participating in this online course.

  • You will receive a reminder email prior to the start of the class with further instructions. Wait to receive these instructions before you attempt to upload your ID.
  • The photo must be clear enough that we can read your name and verify that the person pictured on the ID is in fact the person holding it.
  • After an OCPE staff member reviews the picture and verifies your identity, you will have access to participate in the course when it begins.
