This course is designed for personnel at industrial manufacturing facilities, waste water treatment plants, waste handling and disposal facilities and governmental agencies who are faced with the seemingly intractable problem of controlling odors. Attendees will get a practical overview of what causes odors, how humans perceive them and what do about them, including best management practices to minimize their generation.

Specific topics will include:

  • Understanding human responses to odors and odor measurement
  • Odor occurrences in manufacturing processes
  • A review of odor occurrences in waste water systems, waste handling, and disposal facilities
  • How to evaluate and attempt to determine the root cause of odor problems
  • Engineering control methods and equipment that can be used for odor reduction and/or control
  • Odor abatement methods such as masking agents (and their success rates) and
  • Strategies and methods to deal with the public and regulatory officials on odor complaints.
