So, you have worked as an Au pair and soon you are going back to your country to take the next step - pursuing your CAREER! This class will focus on helping you to build your brand and online image, so that you can market yourself efficiently and effectively. Take advantage of this opportunity to hone your email writing and etiquette skills, create or improve your LinkedIn account, and have headshots taken by a professional photographer. All this in one weekend where you will also earn 3 educational credits!

Au pairs who participate in this two-day weekend class will gain an appreciation for how they are perceived online through communication and information sharing (social media). The course will help students develop their own brand and online image, as well as learn about communication etiquette.

Topics covered include:

  • Your online image, including social media accounts, private settings, picture posting guidelines, when not to "like, retweet, or share"
  • Creating or improving your LinkedIn account, including headshot guidelines, profile writing, and posting
  • Email writing and etiquette, including initial contact and reply etiquette
  • Verbal, written, and visual communication, including texting, phone call, in person
  • Interview skills
  • Language skills and etiquette

NOTE: Please bring your smartphones, tablets, and/or laptop.

This program will give attendees three of the six educational credits required under the J-1 visa. Au pairs (commonly misspelled as au pere or au pear) are required to earn educational credits under the J-1 visa. Click here to learn more.

Registration Fee TBD Includes all course materials, continental breakfast and lunch each day, access to Rutgers' wireless network, and certificates of completion and other J-1 required documentation.

This au pair weekend course will be held on Rutgers' scenic George H. Cook campus in New Brunswick, conveniently located off U.S. Route 1 just minutes from the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. Ample parking is located just steps from the Cook Student Center, where all programming and meals will be held.

GPS systems may not recognize campus addresses. Even if they take you to the correct building, they will not take you to the assigned parking lot. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you use the directions we provide.

  • All visitors must register their vehicles online with the Rutgers Department of Transportation Services. A link will be provided in your course registration confirmation email. Be sure to complete this important step prior to traveling to campus.
  • All Rutgers faculty/staff/students must use their regular Rutgers permit and park in the nearest lot assigned for their permit type.
  • Citations/fines will be issued for failure to comply with these policies.

Au Pair Weekend Course Housing Accommodations

Housing is not included with Rutgers weekend courses for au pairs.

For those who can commute, onsite parking is available.

For those traveling, there are many hotels located near Cook Campus. Visit www.cpe.rutgers.edu/main/hotels.html for a list of nearby housing options. Due to location, the following hotels may be the best choices for those who do not have vehicles.

  • Located on campus, walking distance to course location: Rutgers University Inn & Conference Center

  • Located in downtown New Brunswick, walking distance to Rutgers bus routes: Hyatt Regency & The Heldrich Hotel
