Next offering TBD.

Description

This intensive au pair weekend course will focus on verbal communication in American English and developing confidence when speaking American English. Formal language instruction courses will teach you the basics of spoken and written American English – correct structure, usage, tenses and such. Then you are thrust into the real world, with folks seemingly speaking a "mile a minute" and using words and phrases that you never heard in any classroom course you attended – HELP!

One of the most important components of being successful in language learning – and application - is the mastery of idiomatic forms of expression. Used by native speakers on a daily basis, when you encounter them they may "throw you for a loop" or "knock your socks off," leaving you lost and left out of the conversation. This two-day weekend program for au pairs is a great opportunity to learn about American idioms and their applications in order to improve your verbal and written skills.

Topics will include:

  • pronunciation (accent);
  • intonation (fluidity of speech);
  • American idiomatic expression and slang; and
  • confident self presentation.

Interactive exercises and small group sessions will help to reinforce the information presented and improve your confidence and comfort level with American English. Background on the stories behind these quirky words and phrases will help you better understand how and why they have come to be such a part of day-to-day communications.

This program is sure to fill fast – so "get a move on" and register before it is too late!

Please Note: This weekend course for au pairs is not an ESL course and assumes that attendees have a working knowledge of the English language; rather it is intended to be a "polishing course" to increase levels of fluency and communication comfort.

This program will give attendees three of the six educational credits required under the J-1 visa. Au pairs (commonly misspelled as au pere or au pear) are required to earn educational credits under the J-1 visa. Click here to learn more.
