This online course consists of pre-recorded video lectures that will take approximately 4 hours to watch. You can view these lectures at your own pace anytime during the period the course is open. All class assignments must be completed by May 20, 2021 at 2:00pm EDT. You will not be able to access the online course after that time.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Pesticide Control Program (PCP) regulations contain information on the training requirements for new (never licensed) commercial applicators and/or operators, as well as the requirements for currently licensed persons and those who have not maintained their license. Under these regulations, a new commercial applicator or operator must attend a PCP-approved basic pesticide training course (such as Core, which is described below) and complete forty (40) hours of on-the-job training in the functions and operations associated with the category of license the individual is seeking to obtain. Recertification of a currently-licensed New Jersey commercial pesticide applicator/ operator is maintained by completing recertification courses in both Core (eight units) and the category being recertified for (sixteen units) within a five-year period.

The Rutgers/NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education's (OCPE) Core Training Program is the first step in training for individuals interested in becoming a licensed New Jersey pest control operator and/or applicator. Topics covered during this online course include:

  • Federal pesticide laws;
  • The New Jersey Pesticide Control Act;
  • What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?
  • Pesticide hazards and how to minimize them;
  • Proper handling, storage, and disposal of pesticides; and
  • Types of application equipment and use.

This course satisfies New Jersey's requirement of attending a basic pesticide training course for new applicants seeking to gain a state license.

For more information on pesticide applicator training requirements, please visit http://pestmanagement.rutgers.edu/pat/.

IMPORTANT: This is NOT the CORE exam. This is an online training course. You must register for the exam separately through the Rutgers Pesticide Applicator Certification Exam Registration (PACER) system. Visit pacer.rutgers.edu for more information.

CORE Online Course Procedure

Don't worry, taking an online course is more user-friendly than ever! All you need is:

  • A unique email address to register and log in with (do not use an email address that you share with co-workers or your supervisor);
  • A picture of you holding a government-issued photo ID (driver's license, municipal/county ID, or passport);
  • A computer, iPad, OR cell phone; and
  • Internet access.

Please see specific instructions for accessing and completing this online course below.

  1. A government issued photo ID (passport, driver's license, municipal, or county ID) is required to take the online CORE Basic Pesticide class.  No exceptions can or will be made.
  2. This online course is hosted in Rutgers' Canvas learning management system. After you have registered and paid for the course, you will receive a link to log into Canvas.
  3. When you log in to Canvas, you will be prompted to upload a picture of yourself holding your government-issued photo ID. The photo must be clear enough that we can read the name and verify that the person pictured on the ID is in fact the person holding it. An OCPE staff member will review the picture and verify your identity.
  4. After your identify has been verified, you will have full access to the course content beginning on May 14, 2021 at 8am EDT. You can then begin viewing the pre-recorded class lectures at your own pace. They should take about 4 hours total to view, and you will have access to them until 2pm EDT on May 20, 2021.
  5. After you finish viewing the lectures, the course instructor (Dr. George Hamilton) will be available for a live Q & A session on May 20, 2021 from 2pm-3pm EDT. This is an opportunity to ask any questions you may have and discuss the course material with the instructor.
  6. Once you have finished the online CORE training session, you will be asked to verify the correct spelling of your name and email address. An OCPE staff member will use that name and email address to send you a PDF of your Certificate of Completion.

  • If this is your first time registering with us, please provide your own unique email address when registering; do not provide an email address that you share with co-workers.

  • If you have previously taken classes with us and have used an email address that you share with your co-workers or supervisor, you must update your account with a unique email address.
