WEEK 1: JUNE 24-28

Virtual Reality: Designing 3D Worlds

Discover how to navigate through virtual space and design your own virtual objects!

Have you ever imagined actually having the ability to walk in the shoes of your favorite character from a movie or video game? Have you ever wanted to walk on an alien planet, or fly above the clouds like a bird? With virtual reality (VR), you can do all of this and more.


In this camp, the adventurous and courageous will explore VR and dive into this amazing immersive experience. Explore strange new worlds, learn how to navigate through virtual space, and even design your own virtual objects.


Camper Goals:

  • Learn the difference between mobile VR, home/work VR, and augmented reality
  • Understand the role of VR in industry and what is possible with VR

Web Design 4 Kids

Learn the basics of web design and design your own web pages!

Learn how to design a super cool website, without writing HTML or other code! Campers will learn the basics of web design using WSIWIG design tools and will also be introduced to graphic design software. By the last day of camp, campers will have designed a series of web pages that reflect their personal interests and hobbies.


No prior experience necessary. All skill levels welcome.

WEEK 2: JULY 8-12

3D Game Design – Featuring Portal 2 and Fortnite

If you like 3D-based video games, this camp is for you!

Portal 2 is a puzzle-platform style game that challenges you to use your wits to solve complex problems. Fortnite is a fast paced E-Sports adventure game and one of the most popular games on the market today.


At camp, you'll compete in daily Fortnite battles and use the game as inspiration to design your own 3D adventures. To build your adventure, you will use 3D game engine design tools and Portal 2 to create an adventure that features intricate labyrinths, puzzles, and traps.


All skill levels are welcome.


Camper Goals:

  • Explore and build 3D game worlds, puzzles, and problems
  • Gain familiarity with Portal 2 game design tools and 3D design principles
  • Build a Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM)

Introduction to Scratch - Programming 4 Kids

Using Scratch, an educational application created by the MIT Media Lab, campers will learn the basics of software development in a sophisticated, yet easy-to-learn environment. Campers will learn basic software development techniques and use drag and drop tools to design and program projects.

  • Understand the basic principles of coding
  • Review object oriented design programming concepts with Scratch

Web Design 101

The focus of this camp is HTML development and graphic design. Our expert camp leaders will provide design and development instruction for beginner, intermediate, and advanced campers. Individuals with prior experience can jump right in and start working on their projects. For beginners, no experience is necessary since you will be guided step-by-step through the creative process.

Turn camp into a engineering and coding laboratory as you explore the exciting world of robotics! Learn how to design and build a robot using LEGO® WeDo 2.0. Make your robot come to life, as you learn how to program it to perform project-oriented tasks and challenges.


This camp is designed for kids who have a keen interest in robots. No prior experience with LEGO® WeDo necessary. All skill levels welcome.

Learn the ins-and-outs of how video games are designed and produced. Campers will use a number of software design tools to create Mario-like, platform-style video games.


Highlights include informational lectures, as well as the use of a hands-on game design lab where campers design, customize, construct, and test their creations.

3D Printing and Sim City

Design 3D buildings and objects and explore Sim City!

Dream it. Design it. Create it! This camp will introduce you to the basics of 3D design and architecture, with a focus on designing 3D buildings and objects. Discover cutting-edge technology as you learn and navigate 3D design software. Then, work together as a team of innovators to engineer cool three-dimensional cityscapes and other objects, devices, or gadgets. When not creating 3D worlds, explore city planning and development with Sim City.


No prior experience is necessary. All skill levels are welcome.


Camper Goals:

  • Learn about 3D art and modeling with SketchUp
  • Create dynamic and interesting 3D images
  • Build a 3D name tag to print
  • Design and build an invention, a futuristic vehicle, or self portrait and print on 3D Printer

Digital Photography & Intro to Engineering

Take your photography skills to the next level and discover the science behind simple machines!

The camp day is divided into two topics: Digital Photography and Intro to Engineering. In the Digital Photography session, campers will take photos, make photo edits, add 2D art, and create other fun and engaging images. During the Intro to Engineering portion of the camp, campers will work with a variety of tools that investigate simple motors and machines (gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys), while solving tasks related to mechanical principles.


Camper Goals:

  • Develop artistic abilities and learn how to take cool photos
  • Discover how to take images to the next level with basic photo editing
  • Explore basic concepts about machines and how motors work
  • Discover mechanical principles by exploring, investigating, and solving tasks

WEEK 6: AUGUST 5 - 9

Extreme Minecraft

Build complex, large-scale adventures and mini-games in Minecraft!

For Intermediate and Advanced campers, this program will focus on servers, adventure design, Redstone, and installing MODs. Using their problem solving skills and Redstone circuity, campers will build complex and large-scale adventures and mini-games. Using servers, campers work in teams to learn how to set up and administer Minecraft servers for multi-player adventures. Campers will also be provided with instruction on Tekkit and the Technic Platform to help them install MODs within Minecraft.


Camper Goals:

  • Design an advanced, large-scale Minecraft game level, puzzle, or adventure
  • Use a significant amount of Redstone scripting
  • Use Tekkit MOD features to find your favorite MODs
  • Set up and administer a Minecraft Server (via Minecraft EDU)

Game Design & Roller Coaster Science

Learn video game development basics and roller coaster engineering concepts!

The camp day is divided into two topics: Game Design & Roller Coaster Science. In the Game Design portion of camp, campers learn the basics of video game development and design games by hand with Bloxels and tablets. In the Roller Coaster Science session, campers work with instructors to learn the basic engineering behind roller coasters and use K'Nex to build models that demonstrate how roller coasters work.

  • Gain the ability to define and explain examples of kinetic energy, potential energy, and centripetal force
  • Build scale models of roller coasters
  • Build your own video game with Bloxels

Digital Video: YouTube and Twitch

Calling all aspiring video producers! Learn how to be a star on YouTube and Twitch.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a YouTuber or Twitch video producer? Learn the ins-and-outs of producing video content that is appropriate for showcasing on YouTube and Twitch. Create videos such as Let's Play, package openings, pop culture reviews, and interviews. Learn how to shoot and capture video, as well as develop editorial copy and edit your work.


Camper Goals:

  • Learn how to make films for YouTube and Twitch
  • Review principles of film making

Sports Car Racing and Robot Challenge

The camp day is divided into two topics: Sports Car Racing and Robot Challenge. In Sports Car Racing & Design, campers compete against each other and race Anki smart cars. They will also work in teams to design and build large Anki race courses. During the Robot Challenge, campers will be introduced to the world of robotics. They will learn how to pre-program, code, and operate a robot through a variety of tasks.

  • Learn the science behind racing cars, including speed, drag and draft, friction, and heat
  • Learn how to use Anki cars and design race tracks

Robotics 101

CAMP TIMES

All camps run Monday-Friday.

  • Camp Activities: 9:00am - 4:00pm daily

    • Drop Off: 8:45am - 9:00am

    • Pick Up: 4:00pm - 4:15pm

Campers spend approximately 3/4 of the day engaged with indoor tech projects. The rest of the day is spent participating in fun outdoor camp activities.


CAMP REGISTRATION FEES

  • Standard Fee: $675.00 per child per week

  • Multiple Child Discounted Rate: $625.00 per child per week (send 2 or more children, valid anytime)

  • Multiple Camp Discounted Rate: $625.00 per child per week (attend 2 or more camps, valid anytime)

  • Rutgers Faculty/Staff/Alumni Discounted Rate: $625.00 per child per week (valid anytime)

Please note that we are unable to refund registration fees.


CAMP LOCATION

All camps will be held at the Lipman Learning Center, 71 Lipman Dr., New Brunswick, NJ 08901 on the George H. Cook Campus at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Parents can drop off their camper(s) directly in front of the building.


LUNCH & SNACKS

Campers should bring their own lunch and snacks to camp each day.


HOW TO REGISTER

STEP 1: Download the instructions (see link below), then click the Register Online button (see button below).

STEP 2: Complete the online permission forms FIRST.

STEP 3: After submitting the permission forms, use the link provided to access our online registration portal.

STEP 4: Follow the instructions to create your own account, then create "member" accounts for your child(ren).

STEP 5: Choose your camp fee, then confirm camp selection on the "register for workshops" page. Repeat this step for additional camps or additional children.

STEP 6: Review your selections, then check out to be taken to our secure online payment portal.


Need assistance with registration or payment? No problem! Simply fill out the online permission forms, then call our friendly registrars between 8am-4pm (EST) at 848-932-9271, option 2. They are happy to complete the registration or payment process for you!
